Ingredients:
- 1 cup Elderberries (dried)
- 4 cups of Water
- 2 tbsp Dried Ginger Root
- 3-4 tbsp Cinnamon C/S
- 12 Cloves
- 1 cup Raw Honey or even Manuka Honey
Directions:
- Pour water into saucepan and add elderberries, ginger, cinnamon and cloves (do not add honey yet because the heat will destroy many of its medicinal benefits).
- Bring to a boil and then cover and reduce to a simmer. Simmer for about 45 min to an hour until the liquid has reduced about half.
- Remove from heat and let cool enough to be handled.
- Pour through a strainer, be sure to squeeze all the liquid out.
- Discard elderberries and let the liquid cool to lukewarm.
- Now that it is cool, whisk in honey until mixed well.
- When honey is well mixed into the elderberry mixture, pour the syrup into a pint size jar or 16 oz Amber glass bottle.
Elderberry syrup will stay fresh in refrigerator for 3-4 months
*Optional: For added medicinal benefits, try adding Osha root or Echinacea to your syrup. You may need to increase the water up to a cup or more when adding additional herbs.
Usage: Daily immune support during cold and flu season for kids is 1/2tsp to 1 tsp a day, for adults ½ tbsp – 1 tbsp a day. For maintenance take once daily. For active cold and flu symptoms, take normal dose every 3-5x day to help decrease symptoms.
You can drizzle the syrup over yogurt whether coconut or dairy based, pancakes, and even ice cream.
