How To Increase Energy, Naturally

by Functional Medicine of Idaho

We all want more energy to keep up with life’s demands and to simply feel our best! There are many benefits to an energetic lifestyle, some include an increased ability to self regulate, focus, and process information. Emotional benefits include increased mood, positive outlook, tolerance of others, and overall resolve. So what are some ways to increase energy, naturally?

First, getting the right amount of deep quality sleep is important, we recommend 8 hours. For a quality night’s rest, we recommend turning off the wifi router and keeping phone and electronics far away from the head. Sleep in a cold room between 62-68 degrees and keep the room dark, using blackout curtains when necessary. Consistency is key, so going to bed and waking up at the same time each day is essential. Practice a relaxing mind-body technique before bed to help with an optimal and refreshing rest!

Sunlight first thing in the morning, even for 5-10 minutes is a wonderful way to begin each day. Managing blood sugar by eating a balanced diet, limiting caffeine intake and stopping all caffeine by 12pm will benefit your day and energy as well. We recommend not consuming food 2-3 hours before bed (alcohol 3 hours before bed) and dimming the lights in the evening, wearing amber-colored lenses or blue light blocking glasses 2 hours before bed.

Exercise and hydration is also key. Hiking, walking, yoga/pilates, stretching and active leisure can greatly boost mood and energy. Remember, emotions are energy! High quality connections and deep engagement are health and energy boosters. Add a little creativity to your life as well! Being creative and doing things you love therapeutic and beneficial to your health. “Through creativity and imagination, we find our identity and our reservoir of healing. The more we understand the relationship between creative expression and healing, the more we will discover the healing power of the arts.” – Heather L. Stuckey, DEd and Jeremy Nobel, MD

Self-Care is a way of living that incorporates behaviors that enable one to maintain personal health and balance, replenish energy and motivation, and grow as a person. It is not selfish to take care of yourself in a balanced way, even though many things demand your time, energy and attention. We can have strength and energy to give to others when we nurture our body, environment, relationships and spirit. It is very easy to transfer our emotional energy to others, and others can easily transfer their emotional level to us, so mind the way you interact with others by intentionally fostering positive relationships and paying attention to how you feel around others.

You don’t always need to rely on caffeine, drinks, or other alternatives to boost your energy. Making simple yet effective lifestyle changes can increase your overall energy, mood and quality of life. It’s worth it and we recommend implementing these suggestions today!
